Advani calls for ouster of UPA government

(IANS) BJP leader L.K. Advani Sunday gave a call for ousting the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on the issue of corruption, saying a situation had arisen for a change of regime.

Speaking at the Ramlila ground at the conclusion of his 40-day Jan Chetna Yatra, Advani said the "fog of corruption" needs to be banished.

"The fog hanging over politics due to corruption of government will not vanish automatically.

"It will go due to public awareness, pressure of people, and if not, then by change of regime and that situation has arisen. In a large measure, it has happened due to the government and in a large measure due to hard work done by BJP," Advani said.

Advani accused the government of failing to check the price rise and said support at the rally was "unprecedented."

Bomb plotters should be located: Advani

Lack of leadership in UPA government: Advani

2011/10/10 10:15:16 Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Monday said there is lack of leadership in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, due to which the anger of the people had increased on issues like price rise and corruption.

Briefing the media ahead of his Jan Chetna Yatra anti-graft campaign starting Tuesday from Bihar, Advani said people are angry as the government has failed to check inflation, corruption and bring back black money stashed in foreign banks.

"In the last few years, the anger among people has increased because of rise in prices, corruption and other issues and there is no doubt the reason is lack of leadership in the UPA," he said.

In the past, Advani has accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of weak leadership.

Explaining his yatra, Advani said it will be launched on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Jayprakash Narayan Tuesday from his birthplace Sitab Diara in Bihar.

The Jan Chetna Yatra will focus on good governance and clean politics and pass through 18 states and some union territories. It will culminate in Delhi Nov 20 after covering almost 12,000 km - about 300 km each day.

UPA betrayed people of Telangana: Advani

2011/10/18 10:56:53 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Tuesday charged the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of betraying people of Telangana by going back on its promise to carve out separate state.

Advani, whose "Jan Chetna Yatra" entered Andhra Pradesh, addressed a road show at Adilabad town, about 300 km from Hyderabad, Tuesday evening.

"I was present in parliament when the government made a promise to deliver Telangana," recalled Advani.

He reiterated that the BJP is ready to support a bill for formation of separate Telangana state if the government tables it during the winter session of parliament.

The BJP leader said there was anger and frustration among people of Telangana as they were repeatedly betrayed. "Out of this anger and frustration, many youth and students are committing suicide. There is no other region in the country where people are committing suicide demanding statehood," he said.

Advani's anti-corruption yatra entered Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh from Maharashtra.

After the road shows in Adilabad district, he will reach Nizamabad. After a night halt, he will visit various towns in Nizamabad, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts before reaching Hyderabad to address a public meeting here Thursday.

2011/10/18 9:45:13 Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani on Tuesday announced that the BJP would support the Telangana Bill if it is introduced during the winter session of the Parliament.

Addressing a road show in Adilabad as part of his nation-wide Jana Chaitanya Yatra against corruption which entered Andhra Pradesh here on Tuesday, Advani criticised the UPA Government for going back on its words after promising formation of Telangana State. He said the Telangana agitation has been going on for the last several decades and the Congress has always tried to suppress the demand for statehood. He pointed out that there was a rise in the number of suicides seeking Telangana state.

No regrets about dropping Yeddyuprappa: Advani

2011/11/2 4:49:07 (IANS) Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Wednesday said he did not regret that the party had taken action against former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who was arrested in connection with a graft case.

"The problem in Karnataka is because the party is dealing with corruption firmly," Advani told reporters in Panaji during his anti-corruption Jan Chetna Yatra, which entered its 22nd day Wednesday.

"I do not regret anything. Whether it is the Congress or the BJP, corruption has to be handled effectively," Advani said when asked about differences in the party over the issue of Yeddyurappa, the BJP's first chief minister in southern India, who had to resign after being accused by the Karnataka Lokayukta of corruption and nepotism.

"The moment the Lokayukta gave the report, we did not take more than a couple of hours to decide," said Advani, referring to the party's decision to drop Yeddyurappa.

Commenting on the issue of illegal mining in Goa, Advani said the party would not treat the issue with "kid gloves".

"It is (illegal mining) a serious matter...because of illegal mining those who are doing legal mining are also affected adversely," the senior BJP leader said, adding that his party colleagues were "very active" in combating the scourge of illegal mining.

    Chiru hand in Dasari ouster?

2008/4/8 1:21:11 Is there a hand of megastar Chiranjeevi in the ouster of Dasari Narayana Rao from the union cabinet? The rumours doing the rounds in political circles and elsewhere are all pointing towards this. There is some strong basis for this to. Chiranjeevi has slowly distanced himself away from Dasari voer a period of time. The two do not share cordial relations any longer.

The talk that Dasari helped Srija and Sirish when they ran away from home and got married has some truth in it. The two landed up in Delhi and Dasari is said to have provided them with accommodation, car for travel and also covered their expenses. They were spotted in Lodhi Gardens for most of the time. This naturally hurt Chiranjeevi a lot and considered this as a betrayal and backstabbing by Dasari.

Chiranjeevi is said to have expressed his anger in no uncertain terms. The congress party and chief minister YS Rajashekar Reddy are trying to placate Chiru in all possible ways. They are ready to any length to please Chiru to try and see that he will drop his plans to launch a political party. YSR is reported to have used his clout with the high command and saw to it that Dasari was dropped. This is seen as a friendly overture by the congress party towards Chiranjeevi.

Botsa seeks Advani's apology on Telangana

2011/10/20 10:14:25 Pradesh Congress President Botsa Satyanarayana on Thursday sought an apology from senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani for 'lying with the people of Telangana'.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, Botsa produced a copy of letter dated April 1, 2002, written by LK Advani as Home Minister to the then Lok Sabha MP A Narender sating that the NDA Government "do not propose creation of a separate State of Telangana." In the letter Advani wrote, "The Government of India is of the view that regional disparities in economic development can be tackled through planning and efficient use of available resources. The Government, therefore, do not propose creation of a separate State of Telangana."

Seeking an explanation on this letter, Botsa said Advani have no right to speak about Telangana when he himself has objected to its formation. He reminded that the BJP Manifesto for the State in 1998 clearly promised separate Telangana State and contested the polls on the slogan of "One Vote, Two States". "However, after coming to power at the Centre, the BJP forgot its promise," he said.

Citing a debate held in the Lok Sabha on Telangana, Botsa said that Advani as a Deputy Prime Minister categorically said that the issue of under development of Telangana is best addressed in integrated Andhra Pradesh and that therefore, there was no need to form separate Telangana. He said that BJP talks about Telangana when it is not in power.

Claiming that the Congress never went back on its words on Telangana, he said that in 2004 Manifesto, the Congress party proposed to constitute second States Reorganisation Commission. "Since the Congress formed the government at the Centre with many others including TRS, it was decided that as part of Common Minimum Programme, the issue would be resolved by achieving political consensus," he said. However, he said unfortunately consensus could not be achieved as political parties were vertically divided on the issue in both the regions of the State. "In 2009 Congress Manifesto, while acknowledging that there was an overwhelming sentiment for separate Telangana in that region, it was categorically stated that the interests and sentiments of other stake holders would be taken into account," he said.

Botsa said that unlike BJP, the Congress party never promised separate Telangana 'unconditionally'. He said that December 9, 2009, statement on Telangana could not be honoured as the political parties who supported separate state on December 7, changed their stand after Home Minister P Chidambaram's announcement. He said that the Congress party has been making sincere efforts to resolve the issue. (INN)

I am not in PM race: Advani

    2011/9/21 21:23:51

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Wednesday indicated for the first time he may not be the candidate for prime minister's job in the next general election, provoking the Congress to say there was a war within the main opposition party.Already 83, the former deputy prime minister made the comments after meeting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat "to seek blessings" for his (Advani's) proposed nationwide rath yatra on "clean politics and good governance".

Advani, who was widely seen as the BJP's unstated prime ministerial nominee in the 2009 Lok Sabha battle, did not give a categorical "yes" or "no" when he was asked if he was eyeing the top executive post.Instead, he gave a philosophical answer, saying he had got more from the BJP than anything he could have got from the post of prime minister.Pressed if the RSS wanted him to make it absolutely clear that he was not in the running for the post of prime minister, Advani said: "There are reports."

That statement did not amuse the Congress, which said there was "upheaval in BJP" and that there were five to seven prime ministerial candidates in that party. In contrast, "there is no vacancy for the prime minister's post" in the Congress, spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

Advani, one of the most experienced leaders in Indian politics, flew to Nagpur Wednesday amid reports that a section of the BJP was miffed at him for announcing the rath yatra next month. Some BJP leaders complained privately that he had not taken the party into confidence and that it was an attempt by him to portray himself as the prime ministerial candidate.

The RSS, however, clarified that it had no role to play in shaping the BJP's choice of who a prime minister should be.

"These are issues the BJP decides," RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said in Nagpur, where the RSS has its headquarters.Advani said: "I became a swayamsevak, then a member of Jan Sangh and then BJP. "I feel what I have got from these organisations, from my colleagues, from the country, is much more than (what) the post of prime minister (can give)."

Advani said Bhagwat has given his full support to his yatra, likely to start Oct 11.

The BJP leader said he had also come to Nagpur to inquire after the health of party president Nitin Gadkari, who underwent weight reduction surgery earlier this month.

Advani chose the occasion to denounce the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for a string of corruption scandals that have seen politicians and business executives go to jail.

Terming the 2008 cash-for-vote episode in parliament as the "dirtiest scandal in the history of India", Advani said: "It has not only put a blot on the political system but on democracy."

Advani said Gadkari would announce the schedule of his yatra and it would conclude before the winter session of parliament.

Nikhil Advani gets set for some 'action'

    2007/8/28 2:46:29

After making romantic sagas Kal Ho Naa Ho and Salaam-e-Ishq, Nikhil Advani is now set to prove his versatility with Rohan Sippy's international project Made in China, an action movie.

"I don't want to be identified by any one style or genre. After doing an action film like Made In China I could possibly do a horror film," Advani told.

"Everyone who knows me feels I should do an action film. You've to see me when I'm narrating a story. I'm constantly giving out sound effects, running from this corner to that," he added.

The film is a dream project for the director."My all-time favourite film is Sholay. To have my name associated with the man who made Sholay is one of the biggest highs of my career."

"My all-time favourite film is Sholay. To have my name associated with the man who made Sholay is one of the biggest highs of my career. I mean, to me Sholay is the mother of all films," said Advani.

This is apparently Warner Brothers' first Bollywood film and the talks between them and the Sippys had been going on for almost two years.

"The film is entirely Rohan Sippy's brainchild. From negotiating with Warner Brothers to bringing me on board as director...Rohan did it all," said Advani

Of the big five studios in America, namely Universal, Columbia-Tristar (Sony), 20th Century Fox, Disney and Warner Brothers, two - Sony and Warner - have entered the Hindi film industry in a big way with Saawariya and Made In China respectively. The others are expected to follow suit.

Advani also said: "Sridhar Raghavan has written a wonderful script that weds action and humour. I know I'll have great fun shooting this film."

Shooting for Made In China, with camera work by V. Manikandan who shot Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na and the forthcoming Om Shanti Om, will begin in China in January and the film will be completed in May 2008.

Advani wants New Year’s sun to rise in Telangana

2011/10/19 12:15:02 Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani on Wednesday accused the Congress-led UPA Government of betraying the people of Telangana by going back on its promise on state formation.

Addressing a public meeting as a part of his nation-wide Jana Chaitanya Yatra against corruption at Exhibition Grounds at Nampally here on Wednesday evening, Advani said that granting of statehood for the region could be decided by only two persons - Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. "If they decide to give Telangana, then on 1st January, 2012, sun will rise in the state of Telangana," he said.

However, Advani said that the Congress was not serious in granting statehood for the region. "It is unimaginable that the Centre has remained non-responsive when over 600 people committed suicide and thousands of employees are on strike for over 35 days for a single demand," he said. Reminding that the BJP-led NDA Government formed three smaller states - Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Uttaranchal, he said no constitutional amendment was required to bifurcate a State. He said there was no compulsion that the assembly concerned should pass a resolution for bifurcation. "A state can be carved out by the Parliament with a simple majority," he said.

Advani announced that if the UPA Government introduces Telangana Bill in the winter session of the Parliament, then the BJP which has 116 members in Lok Sabha and 50 in the Rajya Sabha will support the Bill. He reiterated that smaller states could ensure good governance.

Speaking about Jana Chaitanya Yatra he exhorted people to say no to corruption. Stating that this was the sixth Yatra of his political career, Advani said that the enthusiasm he found in Jana Chaitanya Yatra was much higher compared to his previous Yatras. "People usually think that only religious issues excite people, but what I have read and observed is that people gets equally enthusiastic on the feeling of nationalism," he said.

"The subject of Yatra is neither Advani nor BJP, but it is India," he said while denying the critics that the Yatra was aimed at mobilising people for the next elections.

The BJP veteran said that when the BJP was in power, India used to be compared with China in terms of development. It was being projected as the one of the superpowers of 21st Century. However, India's corruption and black money deposited in tax havens have become the subject of discussions in both the domestic and international fora, he said. The black money deposited in foreign banks must be brought back and be spent for the developments of villages across the country, he said.

Advani tried to give a perfect dose of both corruption and Telangana in his speech, although apparently he was not properly briefed about the suicide figures or the Bathakamma. However, he ended his speech with the slogan 'Jai Jai Telangana'.

The public meeting was also addressed by senior BJP leaders M Venkaiah Naidu, Bandaru Dattatreyya and state unit president G Kishan Reddy.

Earlier, addressing a public meeting at Siddipet in Medak district Advani promised that Telangana state would be formed if NDA returns to power in the next elections. After the meeting, Advani had a surprise visitor. He was welcomed by TRS MP from Medak Vijaya Shanti. Later, the TRS MP maintained that she met Advani in her personal capacity and not on behalf of the TRS party. (INN)

Bappi has reworked and re-sung the song."

Advani's directorial debut "Kal Ho Naa Ho" was a runaway success at the box office, but his second film "Salaam-e-Ishq" was letdown.

Action-comedy is Akshay Kumar's forte and Nikhil Advani's 'Chandni Chowk To China' seems to be just what the box office doctors ordered.

"Action and comedy are Akshay's forte and I'm glad to direct him in a film that is written by someone else," Advani said.

"I realised I went wrong in the scripting of 'Salaam-e-Ishq'. I should've edited the script more ruthlessly. Here, all I've to do is to put it all on film," Advani added.

Jointly produced by Warner Brothers and Rohan Sippy, 'Chandni Chowk To China' fits the athletic star like a glove. It will give Akshay a chance to return to his rugged 'Khiladi' roots, with lots of sophisticated fight sequences thrown in.

"It's an action comedy. It's a very big film to be shot in the Far East with very sophisticated technical effects done abroad. It would be more than 'Dhoom 2', but would be very much like 'Dhoom' in mood. 'Dhoom' had more comic elements. Call it talent or luck, but right now I'm only riding piggyback on the reputation of Rohan Sippy and Akshay," Advani revealed.

The director started shooting the film February 22 in different parts of China, including Shanghai. He plans to wrap it up in May. In fact, the film will have many action scenes involving martial artistes.

The rather disappointing performance of 'Salaam-e-Ishq' hasn't dampened director Advani's spirits. He's ready to bounce back with a mammoth action movie.

2011/10/29 7:45:52 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday praised a villager, one of her party workers and the bomb disposal squad for detecting and defusing a bomb under a small bridge near Madurai where Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani was to pass.

In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said: "The pipe bomb kept under the bridge in Alampatti village was detected by a villager Selvaraj and police was informed by AIADMK councillor Mohan. The police acted fast and defused the bomb."

She said Advani called and thanked her Saturday for foiling the evil plot. Jayalalithaa said the police had registered a case and were investigating.

The "pipe bomb" packed with eight kg of explosives was discovered Friday following a tip-off from local residents. Police also seized a 25 metre wire connected to it, well before Advani started his anti-graft Jan Chetna Yatra from Madurai, around 450 km from here.

The second leg of Advani's yatra began from Madurai Friday morning. His nationwide yatra, aimed at fighting black money and corruption, started Oct 11 and will end Nov 20.
