(IANS) People who suffer stroke-like attacks have a mortality rate 20 percent higher than the general population.
In one of the largest studies of its kind, over 20,000 adults hospitalised between 2000-2007 with a transient ischemic attack (TIA) were surveyed for mortality rates.
A TIA occurs when blood flow to the brain ceases for some time, leaving the victim with stroke-like symptoms for a short period. But it could also foreshadow a real stroke if preventative steps are not taken, reports the journal Stroke.
University of New South Wales School of Public Health and Community Medicine's Melina Gattellari, who led the study, said nine years after a TIA, mortality rates are 20 percent higher than for those who do not experience an attack.
Not only that, 50 percent of patients with a TIA had died after nine years. TIA has long been recognised as a risk factor for early stroke, according to a New South Wales statement.
John Worthington, associate professor and Gattellari's Wales' colleague, said the study results emphasised the long-term effects of a TIA event on mortality.
"It is time to re-examine the intensity of secondary prevention that we provide, even in people with a distant history of TIA," he said.
"The brief stroke-like symptoms of transient ischemic attack are a warning of poor outcomes and an opportunity for doctors and patients to intervene before a more deadly event," he said.
Gattellari said, given the research findings, there needed to be more emphasis placed on managing cardiovascular risk factors among those who experience a TIA.
TV anchor Mini Mathur, known for her witty repartees, found herself dumbstruck for a change. It happened when the anchor was approached for the show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa-2’ (Sony).
Mini recalls, “I presumed they were calling me to co-anchor the show. But when they said I would be one of the contestants I almost died of shock. But they kept convincing me that the show was meant for non-dancers. Eventually I relented.”
She continues, “I have never danced in my life. Even in my wildest dreams I could never imagine myself to be on a dance reality contest. But I agreed because I had not done anything new for a long time.”
But hasn’t hosting musical reality shows helped? “No it’s terrible when you are non-dancer. Luckily, I am a music buff with a sense of rhythm. Hopefully, that would help me sail through,” enthuses Mini.
However, she confesses, “I have fallen madly in love with dancing and want to learn more. In the premiere episode, I performed a complex salsa move to the number ‘Its Rocking’ with my choreographer Hemu. My husband Kabir (Khan, director ‘Kabul Express’) complimented me. Maybe, Kabir will offer me a role in his upcoming movie!”
2011/11/14 12:36:31 Raipur, Nov 14 (IANS) Dozens of mini steel plants in mineral-rich Chhattisgarh Monday suspended production amid a raw material shortage and high power tariffs. The plant owners have sought the state's government's help to prevent closure.
"Up to 40 of the state's total 175 mini steel plants have suspended production," Chhattisgarh Mini Steel Plants Association president Ashok Surana told IANS.
"We have asked the government to urgently step in the matter otherwise all the mini steel plant units will get closed," he said.
The mini plants employ over 5,000 people and have a combined monthly output of 350,000 tonnes. These plants use sponge iron, heavy melting scrap and pig iron as raw materials for producing ingots and billets.
An official source says a delegation of the plant owners met Chief Minister Raman Singh Sunday and briefed him about the "grim situation".
He said Singh assured them that he would take up the raw material crisis issue with the steel ministry and will also talk to public sector National Mineral Development Corporation.
Regarding the power tariff, Singh said "he would take a final call soon about industrialists' demand for slashing power tariff after examining all aspects", the source said.
First week of 'Risk' was quite poor and the writing was on the wall on the very first day of its release. With just about 2 crores in its kitty and a heavy fall in the second weekend, the film would find a quick way out of theatres and go down as yet another flop of 200.
It Collected 40 lakhs from Mumbai with Delhi being second highest at 20 lakhs, the film also suffered from the fact that at majority of theatres it was discontinued after Wednesday itself to make way for SEI to arrive on Thursday.

2011/10/8 9:03:37 Union Minister for Petroleum S Jaipal Reddy on Saturday stated that he had informed his opinion on creation of Telangana state to high command in the mini-core committee meeting.
Talking to media persons after participating in the mini-core committee meeting, Jailpal Reddy, however, refused to share his opinion on Telangana with media. In the mini core committee meeting, the leaders from the region and others shared their opinion on Telangana state formation, he said.
When the reporters asked him about likelihood of imposition of President’s rule in the state, Jaipal Reddy said the meeting not discussed anything on that subject. Except discussions on resolving Telangana issue, no other issue figured in the mini-core committee meeting, he stated.
Jaipal Reddy claimed that the High Command has been conducting consultations with all leaders to find an amicable solution towards Telangana state. He also said that the core committee did not come to any conclusion on solving the issue.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Textiles Panabaka Lakshmi said that the Seemandhra leaders would abide by the High Command's decision on Telangana state. She said that the development of state in all fields was their utmost priority. (INN)
2011/11/13 11:54:33 (IANS) The dietary habits of the Spanish population suggest that eating fish is a good way of keeping diabetes at bay.
University of Valencia's Mercedes Sotos Prieto, who conducted the study involving 945 men and women aged between 55 and 80 years with a high cardiovascular risk, found that fish consumption lowered the diabetes risk.
Eating red meat in excess is tied to higher cardio risk, higher blood pressure, diabetes and a moderate decrease in life expectancy mainly due to cancer or heart disease, the journal Nutricion Hospitalaria reports.
Conversely, fish is a staple in the Mediterranean diet and has health benefits for the heart, according to Spain's University of Valencia statement.
Various hypotheses have been put forward that attempt to explain why the consumption of fish can be related to diabetes, the researchers explain.
The increase of Omega-3 in the cells of the skeletal muscles improves insulin sensitivity, a factor associated with the lowered risk of diabetes.
Families in Britain may have to pay a 'death tax' of 170 pounds before laying their loved ones to rest.
Meant to improve the quality and accuracy of death statistics and medical certificates of all non-coroner referred deaths, the government proposals would see relatives having to pay out the sum before they can bury their loved ones, the Daily Mail reported.
The government proposals for debate in the Commons this week would hit families with a minimum charge to check the cause of death when a relative passes away. The tax would be used to help clarify cause of death and in the long run would allow doctors to plot trends in illnesses.
The new scheme would be applied to around 490,000 deaths every year, affecting more than 1,000 families a day, and would hit families with a minimum charge to check the cause of death.
Nearly 1,000 medical examiners would be appointed on a salary of up to 81,500 pounds a year to ensure that doctors fill in forms properly with the accurate cause of death.

KCR said that if the Sri Krishna committee did not come up with a positive recommendation for separate Telangana, then he will go on a fast unto death once again after 31 December.

2011/10/25 11:20:59 (IANS) People who do not have the traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis or build-up of fat in artery walls show discrete signs for it, new research says.
"The proportion of young, apparently healthy adults who are presumably the picture of health who already have atherosclerosis is staggering," says Eric Larose, interventional cardiologist at the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Quebec.
Atherosclerosis can eventually lead to serious problems including heart disease, stroke, or even death, according to a statement from the institute.
The study enrolled 168 young adults (aged between 18 and 35 years), half male and half female, who had no known cardiovascular disease or risk factors such as family history of premature heart disease, diabetes, smoking, high blood cholesterol, or high blood pressure.
Researchers found that although a large proportion of subjects didn't have traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis, they did have discrete signs: greater waist circumference, and visceral fat covering the internal organs within the chest and abdomen.
Visceral fat is difficult to detect because it surrounds the organs deep inside the body, unlike the fat under our skin than can be easily detected in the mirror or with a pinch of the fingers.
"We know obesity is a bad thing," says Larose, "but we're dropping the ball on a large proportion of young adults who don't meet traditional measures of obesity such as weight and BMI." BMI is a height to weight ratio.
The people with greater visceral fat will have greater atherosclerosis, even if they are young and apparently healthy and could benefit from preventive lifestyle measures.
The study was presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress 2011, co-hosted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.
2011/10/1 9:56:19 The bodyguard who gunned down Punjab governor Salman Taseer in January this year was found guilty and sentenced to death Saturday by a Pakistani court, a media report said.
The sentence was handed down by the Anti-Terrorism Court sitting in Rawalpindi.
Taseer was shot dead Jan 4 by Mumtaz Qadri who was a member of the governor's special security squad.
Geo News reported that Qadri was sentenced to death for killing Taseer who had urged reforms to the blasphemy law.
Judge Pervez Ali Shah heard the case in Adiala Jail.
The court said that no one could be given the licence to kill someone. Hence, the killer cannot be pardoned as he has committed a heinous crime by murdering Taseer.
The guard's lawyers said that he has the right to appeal against the verdict in the high court within seven days.
Qadri confessed to killing Taseer as he objected to his call to amend the blasphemy law. Under Pakistan's penal code, anyone who "defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet" can be punished by death or life imprisonment.
The killing took place over the Aasia Bibi case.
Aasia Bibi, a mother of five, had begun facing problems in June 2009 in her village, Ittan Wali, in which hers was the only Christian household. A group of Muslim women and Aasia were picking berries when a row took place.
The women claimed she had insulted the Prophet. She was then pursued by a mob that attempted to kill her.
Taseer's assassin Mumtaz Qadri had been deployed in the security squad of high-profile people, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, despite being declared a "security risk" for such assignments six years ago.
Qadri performed a total of 509 VIP and VVIP duties since he was declared a security risk for these tasks in 2004, said a report compiled by intelligence agencies.
The other politicians with whom Qadri performed guard duties included Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, opposition leader Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and Interior Minister Rehman Malik. He performed all these security duties from April 24, 2008, to Jan 4, 2011.
The report reveals that Qadri was also member of a team for raids conducted by Military Intelligence and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) against terrorist outfits in 2008.
Qadri was deployed as personal security guard of governor Taseer on four occasions - April 15, 2010, May 26, 2010, Sep 3, 2010, and Jan 4, 2011, it said.

While recently filming in Macau, the cast of Reliance Entertainment’s ‘Double Dhamaal’ faced some serious water troubles. A particular sequence, which was shot near a port, required Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jafery, Riteish Deshmukh, and Ashish Chowdhry to get completely drenched in water.
The only problem was that the water in that particular locality was highly dense and infected! The locals too swear by not going inside the water and if done, then they need to get vaccinated immediately.
The scene requirement was such that the boys had to be shown coming out of the water. Director Indra Kumar did not want to risk getting the actors skins exposed to that water. The solution- The crew arranged for a large amount of bottled mineral water!
But what began as splashing water over each other to prepare for the shot, slowly turned into a riot of sorts as the actors, who are very close friends in reality, got into a mischievous mood & began throwing water over each other! “It was a sort of a mini Holi sans the colours” reveals a source from the sets.
Well, if you have such a mad star cast, some ‘Dhamaal’ is surely expected on the sets!
The PJR vs. Ravindranath issue is generating a lot of heat and dust. PJR has hardened his stand and says that he would go ahead with his proposed fast-unto-death from Monday.
He says that “I will sit on a fast unto-death and will go to Delhi only after that”. Now what does that mean? Is PJR planning to withdraw his fast at the last minute? Or has he been sent feelers by mediators that someone from Delhi would come down to Hyderabad and talk him out.
A fast-unto-death is not a one day token agitation and it will have serious repercussions. But PJR seems to give an impression that it may last for a few days and a solution would be found by his party.
2007/7/15 1:35:14 P Janardhan Reddy has firmed up his plans to go ahead with his proposed fast-unto-death. The mediation of senior congress leader V Hanumantha Rao did not yield any results.
The city police have refused permission to PJR to carry out his fast at Indira Park or any other public place. So PJR will sit on his fast at his residence in Domalaguda. PJR says that the cases against his son and son-in-law are false and motivated and he would fight against the injustice till his last breath.
The congress high-command has taken a serious note of this and likely to take disciplinary action against PJR if he does not relent and bury the issue. PJR has also released a poster about his proposed fast-unto-death to the media.
2008/1/3 12:22:01 The TDP chief Chandra Babu Naidu visited PJR’s residence and consoled his family members over PJR’s demise the other day. Not content with offering his condolences, Babu shed some crocodile tars over the death of PJR.
Babu did not leave at that but sough to politicize the death of PJR. He said that the congress was to be blamed (read Y S Rajashekar Reddy) for the death of PJR. The death was caused due to non-availabity of timely medical help, said Babu. Babu said that the doctors in the ambulance should have been summoned to give first aid to PJR as soon s he collapsed.
The facts state otherwise. PJR collapsed as soon as he stepped out of his car. His followers immediately bundled him into a car and sped away to take him to a hospital. The chief minister and others were inside the hall, where a meeting was going on. The news about PJR falling down and he being rushed to a hospital was informed to them after his supporters took PJR to the hospital. As such, the chief minister or any one present there could do anything.
But for Babu any weapon is good enough as long as he can attack the congress and YSR. Even PJR’s dead body is no bar for power hungry Babu and he chose to use it. The senior congress leader and close friend of PJR, V Hanumantha Rao said that thee was no ambulance at the venue at that time. VH also said that he was informed about it only after PJR was taken to the hospital.
