(IANS) A new approach to treating spinal injuries among animals could pave the way for prevention of paralysis in thousands of people worldwide every year.
Ben Goss, researcher at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation, investigated how the spine could be protected after an injury.
"At present spinal cord injury is permanent and irreversible, but I believe our research has the potential to improve outcomes and this might be the first step to achieving a cure," said Goss, the Journal of Neurotrauma reported.
"The initial injury to the spinal cord is much like a bruise. However, unlike ordinary bruises the spinal cord has a persistent inflammatory response that leads to further damage, our research is looking at the effects of adding proteins, also known as growth factors, to the spinal cord to reduce or switch off the inflammation and prevent secondary neurological (brain or spinal cell) damage, " he added.
The treatment, which combined specific proteins, was applied to animals immediately after a spinal cord injury and evaluated after one and three month periods, a university statement said.
Goss said researchers from Griffith University also found the size of the lesion (damage) caused by the spinal cord injury significantly smaller in the treated group compared to animals that did not receive treatment.
"This study has demonstrated for the first time a treatment can reduce or eliminate secondary degeneration after traumatic injury to the spinal cord," he said.

In fact his new movie shoot has also been delayed because of the treatment now.
Says Hrithik, 'While working towards fulfilling my commitments to all my work - ads & film, I did not much care about my knee pain & have neglected my doctors advise to not put any stress on it and take complete rest if I wanted it to heal.'
However, going by the present condition, he thinks it's best to take a 6-week break and recuperate fully rather than stretch it further to the point of non-repair. Mumbai, Sep 3 (IANS) Sohail Khan was hoping to accompany his elder brother Salman for the latter's surgery in Pittsburgh, but Hurricane Irene played spoilsport.
The family's original plan of travelling to Pittsburgh via New York had to be dropped because of the Hurricane, and they took a quick decision to leave Monday night rather than after Eid (Wednesday) as planned. This led to a lot of confusion and chaos in the Khan household.
"It was decided that Salman's parents who were really keen to accompany him would stay back since Bhai didn't want Eid and Ganesh Chaturthi to not be celebrated in their household. Salman's brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri and sister Alvira wanted to accompany Bhai. But Bhai insisted that Atul stay back for the release of 'Bodyguard'. Finally it was decided that Bhai's sister and brothers Alvira, Arbaaz and Sohail would accompany him," said a source.
However, when the flight departed, only Arbaaz, Alvira and Salman's business manager left with Salman, leaving many wondering what happened to Sohail.
"I couldn't get a place in the flight! Because of the hurricane all flights are going full. There's a backlog of around 3,000 delayed and cancelled flights for the US. So Bhai left with Alvira and Arbaaz," said Sohail.
If sources are to be believed, the Khan family did a load of online research on the best possible place for Salman's treatment before zeroing in on Pittsburgh, known to have the finest treatment for his condition Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Salman, whose latest release ?Bodyguard? opened to record-breaking first day collections, has already undergone surgery for his nerve problem that was causing excruciating pain in his head, jaws and cheeks. He is fine, and recovering, according to Agnihotri.
?Bhai doing fine. His medical procedure happened yesterday in Pittsburgh. This was the first step. Now the doctors will monitor him to study the results. He was in the operation theatre for eight hours. He is under observation for three days. Then the doctors will take a call on the further course of treatment. God willing, he will heal soon," he said.
After the treatment, Salman might work only on one movie, Kabir Khan's ?Ek Tha Tiger?, for the rest of this year.

The extended shooting schedule of Ashutosh Gowarikar's magnum opus, Jodha Akbar has taken a toll on Hrithik Roshan's health. He suffered a knee injury while enacting some battle sequences and has been advised bed rest for three months.
The actor, who continues to film lest the film's post-production gets delayed, complained of acute pain recently and moved out of the chalet, which was built for the actor at ND Studios in Karjat.
Hrithik's spokesperson Ashok Vishodia admits that the actor is in pain. “Hrithik has had a problem with his knees. He has been under treatment for a while. He put up at a hotel in Lonavla this time around.”
Apparently, Hrithik was no too happy with the amenities provided to him at the cottage in ND Studios and eventually, checked into a five-star hotel at Lonavla.
A source close to the actor informs, “The three-hour long journey from his home to the sets at Karjat and back was only adding to his pain. So Hrithik decided to stay at the cottage specially built for him at the ND Studios. Recently, he again complained of acute pain in the knee. That's when he checked into a five-star hotel at Lonavla for a more comfortable stay.”
When quizzed about it, Nitin Desai denies that Hrithik had any trouble at the chalet and says, “Hrithik has always referred to our cottages as 'home, away from home'. We are well-equipped and he has had a comfortable stay.”
Hrithik has been shooting for Jodha Akbar for almost a year now. His knee injury has only gone worse because the film's exhausting sequences didn't allow him much time to heal his wounds. “Hrithik Roshan had braved a spate of knee injuries during the schedule. He was taking medicines but he didn't get the much required rest,” says another source.
However, for the next few months, the actor is going to stay put in Mumbai and complete dubbing for the film. He hasn't signed any new projects yet. His spokesperson says, “He has just completed a song sequence for Jodha Akbar and is back in the city. He might need to go back to Karjat for some patchwork. He is not working on any other films as of now.”
