(IANS) An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked India's northeast, Myanmar and Bangladesh Monday, triggering panic among people.
The tremor was felt at 8.47 a.m. in most parts of Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur, besides in Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The epicentre was located at 24.947°N, 95.226°E in Myanmar, about 130 km east of Manipur capital Imphal, the website of US Geological Survey said.
Seven northeastern states - Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur - are considered by seismologists to be the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the world.
The region experienced one of the worst earthquakes, measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, in 1897, that claimed the lives of over 1,600 people.
In September, more than 50 people died after a killer quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale shook the region.

The center of the earthquake was 40 kilometers below the seabed, about 60 miles east of the city of Sendai and about 90 miles from Fukushima, according to Japan's Meteorological Agency.
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) says that the quake hasn’t caused any further damage to the Daiichi nuclear power plant and that all the workers have been temporarily evacuated from the facilities. There were no injuries reported.

The quake destroyed several buildings in Van and caused panic. The quake was felt in the cities of Diyarbakir, Sirnak, Siirt, Batman and Mardin.
Over 100 people feared dead under debris and hundreds severely injured in this quake. Rescue teams are searching for the people trapped under debris.
This is the first ever massive earth quake that hits Turkey.

The earthquake Sunday damaged some Indian Army bunkers in eastern Sikkim near Nathu-La pass along the India-China border and left many soldiers injured, said sources.
Helicopters were deployed to evacuate the soldiers, said sources adding that on-ground army installations were intact. The required soldier strength in the sensitive area was in place, they said.
The 6.8-magnitude quake of around two minutes followed by after-shocks rocked the region and caused the damage to the bunkers. According to sources, rescue work was getting affected because of land slides in the area as a result of torrential rains in the past two days.

About 1,000 people may have died in the 7.3-magnitude quake which hit Turkey's southeastern province of Van Sunday, an official said.

"The toll from this earthquake could be 500 to 1,000," Xinhua quoted Mustafa Erdik, the head of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul, as saying.
The Turkish earthquake observatory, however, put the quake's magnitute at 7.2 on the Richter scale.
The Kandilli centre originally reported that the earthquake was 6.6 on the Richter scale, but later corrected it to 7.2 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake damaged several buildings in the Van province, but the most serious damage was in the neighbouring town of Ercis. Several strong aftershocks were also reported.
Turky's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit the area shortly to assess the situation.
Over 500 search, rescue and health personnel have been sent to Van from nearly 40 provinces, said Prime Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) in a release.
"There are so many dead. Several buildings have collapsed, there is so much destruction," Zulfikar Arapoglu, mayor of Ercis, told NTV television. "We need urgent aid, we need medics."
Turky's deputy prime minister Besir Atalay earlier said that 25 to 30 buildings collapsed in the town of Ercis.
Residents spilled out into the streets in panic as rescue workers struggled to save people believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings, the television footage showed.
Turkish Red Crescent is sending tents, blankets and other aid materials to the quake-hit province despite ongoing aftershocks, according to Anatolia reports.
Some people were trapped under debris of buildings in central Van, it added.

At least 35 people were killed and hundreds injured in India in the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that wreaked havoc in the Sikkim-Nepal border region Sunday, officials said Monday.
The high-intensity quake rocked large parts of northern and eastern India and eastern region of Nepal just after 6 p.m. Sunday. It was followed by two after-shocks.
Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh, in New Delhi, put the casualty figure at 25. However, figures made available officially in Sikkim, West Bengal and Bihar pointed to the higher toll.
Sikkim, the epicentre of the quake, was the worst-affected, accounting for 23 deaths with the figure likely to go up, according to officials. Six people were killed in the northern districts of West Bengal and another six in Bihar, reports said.
In Nepal, which experienced its biggest quake in 80 years, nine people had died as per latest reports.
Neighbouring Tibet reported seven deaths in Sunday's quake.
An early morning mild quake in Maharashtra triggered more fears, though it was of 3.9 magnitude only.
Sikkim was cut-off from the rest of the country due to landslides triggered by the quake which blocked national highway 31-A at eight places, said G. Anandan, district magistrate, Sikkim East.
As many as 25 concrete bridges were damaged between West Bengal's Siliguri and Gangtok on the 120-km stretch of national highway 31-A, he said. Five National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were unable to reach Sikkim due to the landslides.
About 10 army combat engineer columns were rushed with equipment for opening the blocked road between Siliguri and Gangtok. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was also mobilised for restoring normal traffic on NH-31A.
About 50 army columns -- comprising medical teams, engineer detachments and relief units -- in small teams were deployed across Sikkim -- where over 200 people have been injured, and at Siliguri and Binaguri towns in West Bengal.
The Sikkim secretariat building in Gangtok also developed cracks.
In neighbouring West Bengal, two people died in Siliguri, three in Darjeeling and one in Jalpaiguri district, police said.
Many patients in a nursing home in Siliguri were also injured, North Bengal Affairs Minister Gautam Deb said late Sunday. The injured figure is said to be over 200.
Power supply was disrupted in areas near Sikkim -- at Kalimpong, adjoining Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts. A sub-station was damaged in Siliguri but the supply was restored late Sunday.
"Most of the north Bengal areas, including Darjeeling, were lashed by heavy rains that continued through Sunday night. The situation deteriorated with landslides in Kalimpong and Kurseong (in Darjeeling)," Deb said.
In Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced Rs.1.5 lakh compensation for the kin of each of the six deceased.
A seven-year-old girl died at Harnaut in Nalanda in a wall collapse while a man died in Darbhanga and another in Bhagalpur when they fell down while running for safety during the earthquake.
Two people died in Nawada and another person in Patna.
In Nepal, which was hit in the eastern region and capital city Kathmandu, over 100 people were injured with hundreds of houses and buildings collapsing.
Three people died in a wall collapse in capital Kathmandu while over 50 were injured trying to jump from windows and balconies in panic.

2011/9/21 0:59:29 Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Tuesday expressed grief over the deaths due to the earthquake that hit eastern and northern India, Nepal and Tibet, and donated Rs.500,000 for relief work in Sikkim.
In a letter to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, the Nobel laureate said: "I was saddened to learn about the loss of life and damage to property... I offer my sympathy and condolences to all those families who have been directly affected by what I understand is one of the worst earthquakes in recent memory."
He donated Rs.500,000 from the Dalai Lama Trust towards relief work in the affected areas of Sikkim, the Dalai Lama's office said here.

At least 14 people were killed and at least 160 injured Sunday as a 6.8 intensity earthquake ravaged the Sikkim-Nepal border region, jolting large parts of India, Bangladesh and Nepal and causing widespread panic.
Tens of thousands scurried out of their homes just after 6 p.m. in numerous cities, including New Delhi, following the powerful tremor that was quickly followed by two major aftershocks.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the epicentre of the quake was on the Sikkim-Nepal border.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh immediately convened a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority. The Indian Army was put on alert for deployment in Sikkim.
In no time, the Indian Air Force flew five cargo planes with relief material and rescue personnel for deployment in Sikkim and West Bengal, which accounted for nine deaths.
Five people have been killed and around 60 injured, Sikkim Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso said, adding the toll could go up as reports from various villages were still pouring in.
One of the dead was a child, officials in Gangtok said. Another was Sandipan Banerjee, an official with a pharmaceutical company who died when a house collapsed in Rangpo, 40 km from Gangtok.
Another man died when his vehicle was trapped in a massive mudslide on the outskirts of Gangtok.
The worst, officials said, was feared in the Sikkim-Nepal border region, where mudslides had blockaded roads.

Meanwhile, National Highway 31-A, Sikkim's only road link to the rest of India, was blocked due to landslides in West Bengal's Darjeeling district.
Four people were killed, at least 100 injured and power supply was disrupted in parts of northern West Bengal. Many buildings developed cracks.
North Bengal Affairs Minister Gautam Deb said the deaths were reported from Siliguri in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri district, while police reported two deaths, one each in Kalimpong and Kurseong hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling.
"One person died in Siliguri. Another died in Jalpaiguri district," Deb told IANS over phone.
The quake triggered landslides in Kalimpong and Kurseong hill sub-divisions while several patients in a nursing home in Siliguri sub-division of Darjeeling district were injured, he said.
In New Delhi, Cabinet Secretary Ajit Kumar Seth told TimesNow: "As time passes, we will get more information... Everyone is helping out."
At least five people were killed in Nepal, three of them in Kathmandu alone, triggering panic and chaos all across the Himalayan kingdom, news reports said.
A wall of the British embassy in Kathmandu, located in the Lainchaur area close to the Indian embassy, collapsed after the quake, smashing a car and killing three people inside.
Dozens were injured as houses crashed across the mountainous country, snapping power supply and communication lines.
Across India, buildings shook triggering panic almost all over northern and eastern India, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Mizoram.
In Assam's major city Guwahati, people ran out of their homes.
Power supply was disrupted in parts of northern West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in Kolkata.
"In no time all the people in my neighbourhood were out of their apartments," said Anjani Kumari, who lives on Boring Road in Patna, Bihar.
The experience was particularly frightening for those in high rises.
"I was watching TV and for a few seconds thought my head was spinning. When I realised it was an earthquake, I ran out," said Meenakshi Sinha, who lives on the seventh floor of an apartment complex in Noida.
She said the tremors lasted 30 to 40 seconds.
Lucknow resident Vijay Dutt told IANS: "There were strong tremors. In our building, everybody rushed out fearing the worst. The furniture shook and windows rattled. It was scary," he added.
In Tripura, officials said the quake was also felt in neighbouring Bangladesh.
This is the fourth earthquake to hit India this month.
